I’ve been wanting to learn how to decorate cakes and cupcakes for the longest time. So I planned a girl’s night for me and my girlfriends to learn some basic cake decorating techniques. I mean, what’s better than girlfriends, wine & cake?
We baked our cakes and made our frosting ahead of time so that when we got together all we had to do was have some drinks, frost the cakes and start learning! At least that was what I thought was going to happen. Turns out, there are a few more steps involved in making a great cake!
Don’t laugh at my funny looking cake that sunk in the middle! It actually wasn’t a big deal because you cut off the top of the cake to make it even, so in the end you couldn’t even tell.
Once both cakes are cut even you put a layer of frosting in between them and then frost the entire cake on top and on the sides.
Then the magic can begin! I have to say, I always thought cake decorating would be easy for me to learn, but it is much harder than I thought it would be. We practiced on a board first before trying our techniques on the cake. We learned two different decorating techniques and also practiced writing. I am happy with the results for it being my first try!
Plus we got to eat all of the cake tops that we cut off while we were decorating!! Then I had a beautiful cake to take home and share with my family. (By share, I mean they each got 1 slice and I ate the rest of the cake! Don’t judge me!!)
Overall it was a fun way to spend the evening with my best girlfriends! And I have some new decorating skills to perfect.
